The "untouchable" and her rise to power in India

In the late 1960s, a little girl and her family set out from a Delhi shanty town to visit her grandparents in a distant village. It was a long journey, and her parents began to chat to other passengers on the bus. When they revealed their destination was the chamar mohalla – the area usually found on the outskirts of a village and inhabited by those at the lowest level of the Indian caste hierarchy – the bus fell silent. The little girl’s mother had to explain to her that other Indians considered the caste to which her family belonged to be unclean.

More than 40 years later, that little girl, known simply as Mayawati, is a political hero for lower-caste Indians throughout the north of the country. She is a Dalit, a member of the caste known historically as “untouchables”. And Dalits in the state of Uttar Pradesh hurry in their thousands to her rallies, where she tells them how proud she is to have been born into a Dalit family. “I am the daughter of a Chamar [a Dalit]. I am a Chamar. I am yours.” In May 2007, she became chief minister of Uttar Pradesh for the fourth time. On taking the oath of office, she declared that “nobody can stop me from becoming prime minister”. We shall find out soon enough if she is right: India goes to the polls in a general election in April and May this year.

BSP chief Mayawati slams Centre, UP government over law and order situation

BSP President Mayawati on Friday charged the BJP government at the Centre and Samajwadi Party government in Uttar Pradesh of failing to provide a peaceful atmosphere to the people.

"At the national stage, the BJP government and in the state, the Samajwadi Party government have totally failed to provide a peaceful, harmonious and just atmosphere to the people," Mayawati was quoted as saying at a BSP meet in a release here.

"There appears to be a competition going on between Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Centre and SP government in the state as to who can mislead the people by making tall claims.

"Both governments led by BJP and SP appear to be completely passive and lax about the welfare of crores of dalits, backwards, minorities especially Muslims and poor among the upper castes which is not in national interest," she said.

Mayawati who was addressing a meeting of senior party leaders and office bearers of Uttar Pradesh andUttarakhand units, which had been overhauled recently, said that now the main opposition parties as well as the common people are agreeing to what the BSP had been saying about prevailing "jungle raj" and dismal law and order under the SP government.

"The constitutional traditions and law are being flouted ...Crime control and law and order is very bad, officials are locking horns with each other, corruption is rampant and common people are being harassed," she said, adding that power crisis has made things more difficult for the people.

Reiterating her party's demand, Mayawati said that Governor Ram Naik has himself aired his views on the bad state of affairs in the state several times but this is not the real remedy of the problems.

"Therefore, the BSP makes a renewed demand from the Governor to make the Centre aware of the ground situation in the state in writing, recommending President's rule to fulfil his constitutional duty," she said, adding that otherwise BJP would be equally responsible alongwith the SP in the eyes of the suffering people.

Mayawati who also issued directives to the leaders of both the states for increasing party's support base among the sarv samaj and organisational matters, said that the situation in Uttarakhand with regard to law and order and development under the Congress government also does not appear to be any better.

In a state-level protest march by the BSP under the leadership of their state president Avtar Singh Karimpuri, it was announced on Friday that the party would start ‘Punjab Bachao Abhiyaan’ from November 1, and drug addiction in the state would be the main issue.

The rally was taken out from Dana Mandi, Jalandhar Bypass. Later, the BSP leaders went to the DC office to give  a memorandum addressed to the Punjab Governor.

Karimpuri said that the main issue was rising atrocities against Dalits. He raised the suicide case of Dr Supriya, who was a PG resident at DMCH, and the killing of brothers in Jamalpur. He added that complaints had also come from Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Sangrur, Phagwara and many other areas.

He expressed his concern over conversion of 125 seats of MBBS in ST quota into general category. Prominent among other leaders were Balwinder Kumar and Balwinder Bitta.

Lucknow : “ABHI nahin to kabhi nahin (If not now, then never),” is how
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leaders describe Uttar Pradesh Chief
Minister Mayawati’s chances of becoming Prime Minister after the
forthcoming Lok Sabha polls. Even as denials from various Third Front
parties fly back and forth about Maya being named as its prime
ministerial candidate, BSP leaders have been relentlessly trying to
expand the party’s base across India, with BSP leaders expected to
contest almost all the 543 Lok Sabha seats in India.

Though Mayawati herself has declared that there is no “scope” to
discuss the prime ministerial candidate for the Third Front until
after the results for the 15th Lok Sabha results are declared, her
strategic efforts to permeate regional boundaries at this juncture do
add fuel to the guessing game about her ambitions. A look at the
inroads made by the BSP across the country:

The south

“It was not her sudden decision to send (the BSP’s) national secretary
Satish Chandra Mishra to attend the Third Front rally in Karnataka.
She weighed her options well and then she found herself in a strong
bargaining position to be projected as the prime-ministerial candidate
of the proposed Third Front,” a source in the BSP disclosed.

Incidentally, the rally was organised just three days before the
celebration of her party’s founder Kanshi Ram’s birth anniversary on
March 15. “She killed two birds with one stone. First, she used this
opportunity to communicate her demand for her projection as the PM
candidate to the Third Front leaders before inviting them to attend
her party’s function. Then she ensured considerable rise in her
popularity graph among the voters of southern states as her party’s
organisational works in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and
Karnataka have already crossed the third stage,” another source said.

The party’s groundwork in almost every state provides an insight into
her game plan (see box) to force regional parties to accept her as a
force to be reckoned with. “She is not only popular but also in a
position to damage the electoral prospect of regional political
parties in several states,” a BSP source, who is associated with
organisational matters, explained.

In Kerala, the Mayawati has approved the candidates for 13 of the
total 20 seats. “We had contested 106 out of the total 140 seats in
the last Assembly election in Kerala and vote share was about 1.24 per
cent. This is for the first time when we are going to contest all the
seats in Kerala,” Suresh Manse who is in-charge of the Kerala, Tamil
Nadu and Andhra Pradesh told this reporter.

The party is also being noticed in Karnataka. “We have worked a lot to
woo the Madiga, Gohara and Holia castes. Within the Lingayat
community, there are several castes and they have been also covered
under the party’s Bhaichara committees,” a source in BSP disclosed.
The party has already announced 15 candidates out of the total 28
seats. “Soon the names of the rest of the candidates would be
announced,” the party’s Karnataka in-charge Veer Singh said.

Madhya Pradesh

“We receive an average seven to eight applications from those hoping
to be the party’s candidate in every constituency of this state,” said
Narayan Prasad Ahirwar who heads the BSP’s Madhya Pradesh unit.

The BSP had begun its association with the Madhya Pradesh right from
the days of Kanshi Ram. Although the party could bag only seven seats
in the last Assembly election, it polled 11 per cent votes. “Nearly 20
candidates of the BSP got 30-35 percent vote polled,” recalled a
source. The state has already sent one BSP member to Parliament. As
per the party’s assessment, 12 seats are put under the ‘A’ category
this time. “A category means those parliamentary constituencies where
the party had performed well and bagged more than two lakhs votes,”
explained a party insider.

The candidates’ list of the Madhya Pradesh unit is still awaiting
Mayawati’s approval.

Rajasthan and Delhi

“Gone are the days when we used to play the role of spoilsport. The
Assembly elections in four states (Rajasthan, Delhi, MP and
Chhattisgarh) were an eye-opener for us. Now we hope to win seats in
these states,” a senior leader said. The party’s vote-share in
Rajasthan was about 8 per cent while it had won six Assembly seats in
the state. “The party has selected two of its Rajasthan MLAs as Lok
Sabha candidates in Rajasthan,” another source said. In Delhi, the
party has announced the names of its candidates for all the seven
seats. “The main focus of the party is on South Delhi, North-West
Delhi and East Delhi seats,” the source added.

Punjab and Haryana

The party has almost completed the candidate-selection process in
Uttarakhand, Punjab and Haryana, besides Uttar Pradesh. “These are the
states in which the party’s important brotherhood committees have
already accomplished what they set out to do, while the booth
committees are functioning well,” said a source, describing the
relatively early selection of candidates in these states. For example,
the party has already cleared the names of 12 candidates out of a
total of 13 seats in Punjab. These candidates include former governor
B K N Chhibber for Amritsar, retired IFS officer Surjeet Singh for the
Jalandhar seat and former Sessions Judge Gurnam Singh Sewak.

Maharashtra

The party has cleared the names of 13 out of 42 seats of Maharashtra.
“The party has formed the bhaichara committees for different castes
such as Banjara, Teli Samaj, Maratha, Dhangar, Madi and Kunabi in all
of Maharashtra’s districts,” said a source. “Arun Gawli has been
selected as BSP candidate for the South-Central Mumbai seat, besides
Mahant Sudhir Das from Nashik. Mahant belongs to the same family that
had stopped Ambedkar from entering a temple.

Bihar

Mayawati is set to release a list of candidates for Bihar. “The
party’s position in Bihar is better only in such areas that are
located close to the border,” a BSP leader added.

More than 60per cent of India's population live on less than $2 a day, so it is hardly surprising the poor and disenfranchised are politically motivated. Dalits - who sit at the bottom of India's rigid caste system - represent 16 per cent of the population, 175million out of a total 1.1 billion people.

"Mayawati is Chief Minister of a state which has as many people as Brazil (190 million) so we should look at her party seriously," Professor Rangarajan told The Australian.

BSP to announce candidates' list on March 15

BANGALORE: Karnataka unit BSP today said it would release the list of 13 candidates for the Lok Sabha polls on March 15. 

As per the party's earlier decision, there will be no pre-poll alliance with any political outfit, BSP state unit President Marasandra Muniyappa told reporters here. 

"Any post-poll alliance would be decided by party chief Mayawati," he said. 

BSP has already announced a list of candidates for 15 constituencies.

In fact, BSP assembly candidates in South Delhi Lok Sabha constituency got a vote share of over 24.5% by polling 2.12 lakh votes. The BSP had won Badarpur seat and was second in Tughlakabad and Deoli. In half of the assembly constituencies, Gujjars have a sizeable population which can influence the poll outcome. Tanwar himself is a Gujjar. 

Similarly, the party bagged 17.7% votes in North-East by polling 1.68 lakh votes and winning the Gokalpur seat. In East Delhi, BSP candidates got 12.1% votes.

No one can ignore Mayawati -- that is for sure.

Many foresee her as the next prime minister. The BSP chief and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati is keeping her cards close to her chest.

Has not committed any poll deals with any party. But she will set terms to the Third Front if she gets a lion's share of the 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh. Earlier, Karat struck a deal with Maya, but it fell apart later.

I am wondering if we (Dalit-Bahujans) those who want to see Behan-Mayawati as next Prime Minister of India doing enough for this? Coming elections is a great opportunity for all of us to bring change in India.

Few days ago news appeared “National Dalit Front” will support Mr. Paswan as next PM. It made me to think what founder of Bahujan Samaj Party, Babu Kanshi Ram had said in his book named “Chamcha Jug”. He had said “Hit the hand those operates the Chamchas.” Kanshi Ram has further advised us not to hit the Chamcha’s but hit the hands those operate such Chamchas (Congress operate) as there is endless list of Chamcha’s in our Samaj. If we’ll hit one of the Chamcha they’ll pick up next & next. But if we’ll hit the hands those pick such Chamcha’s they won’t dare to pick further!

For now our main concern should be how to capture political power in the coming elections.

A day before I saw two pigs fighting for taking credit that I have made the place dirtier, but the second one was saying no, it’s not you but it’s me who had made this place dirtier, I have pissed more than you.

Winning 8 OSCAR, UPA Govt. counts in the list of “UPA’s Achievements” (for providing “Danny Boyle” slums!)

All the politicians are feeling proud & why shouldn’t they take credit for what they have nourished from last 60 years (or say last 1000s years!)? I do agree that all these politicians along with Mumbai Mayors should have been nominated for “Best Supporting Actor” category! As you all know keeping slums is how much difficult in this recession period! Major credit of OSCAR should go to many of our dedicated politicians, without their dedicated efforts of disgusting corruption; such condition of slums wouldn’t be possible.

I don’t think heads of these politicians will bow in shame when common people are living in slums. Rather than taking some efforts to give education to slum people, giving security, providing them with good houses these politicians are fighting for taking credit that see we have created slums & we won OSCAR for it! Let’s create more slums so as next time we give clean sweep to rest of world at OSCAR awards?  Or I think next credit these politicians will take for Mumbai attacks that in our regime there were more terrorist attacks.

Same pigs I saw were again fighting over taking credit for fighting against terrorism. 1^st pig said in my regime in whole country there were more than 85 bomb blasts in 6 months. 2^nd pig claimed sees you have failed, in my regime there was a big Kargil War (1000s were killed, still wives, mothers of those heroes can’t believe that their husbands/sons are no more)! 2^nd pig didn’t stopped here, he continued to claim see in the states where I am ruling like in Orissa we killed thousands innocent Christians, in Bihar just because of our dedicated corrupt efforts there was flood in Kosi river, in Karnataka we attacked on innocent women in ‘Pub” (In England it means nothing but a “Public House”, where people meet & have some refreshment but these pigs have misunderstood this as brothel) as we are the real supporters of Hindu culture, this all we made possible only through inefficiency & unlawfulness!

1^st pig in my regime I made possible killing of Sikhs, 2^nd pig replied in my regime I made possible killing of Christians, Muslims. (Forget about the condition of Dalits both pigs can take equal credit).

1^st pig didn’t stopped here & how can he stop when there are many much things to take credit for? He said in my regime the number of children suffering from malnutrition went up from 15.5% to 19.1% while the number of kids under five with anemia rose from 74.2% to 79.2% though we have doubled the child specific schemes. Credit for this also goes to our dedicated corrupt, cunning politicians. 2^nd pig was hopeful that they will be given chance in next elections to improve this tally & then he’ll see the 1^st pig. Isn’t shameful that still millions children are deprived of their rights, food, security & health.

1^st pig is tackling 2^nd pig through “Bharat Nirman” that after coming again in power I’ll give cheap food to everyone (no need to give education & jobs as I am going to give 2kg rice free per month!). 2^nd pig claimed that after coming to power i’ll run Rath Yatra throughout India, i’ll provide trishuls to everyone (so as they can kill Christians, Muslims, and Dalits easily), I’ll start Surya Namaskar in schools, (I’ll bring superstitious to schools), bring astrology to schools then everyone will get job!

I was stunned how these pigs are fighting & I preferred to leave those pigs fighting…come back to slums…

OSCAR winning movie showed clearly that children being tortured, forced into begging profession (highly paid!) in addition to all other evils like corrupt police force, brothels etc. Does 1^st pig take credit for all of these?

People in slums are living in unimaginable poverty, stop taking credit for all these & work for improvement.

There were many more issues on which pigs wanted to take credit for, but till that time their landlord appeared & both disappeared!  Anyhow pigs will continue fighting & it’s time for all of us to think, do we want to see these pigs in parliament again? Think logically & this time VOTE FOR CHANGE!
